The Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR) is the host of this year's conference of the European Association of Peace Operations Training Centres (EAPTC) from 10 - 12 May 2022.

Our medieval Peace castle, the venue for our two-day gathering, is a unique and ideal location for reflection, exchange and dialogue. The programme we have created jointly with our friends from within the EAPTC community is an invitation to come together and do exactly that: reflecting, exchanging and debating about current topics relative to peace and crisis management capacity development and training. The venue and the programme also provide ample space and opportunity for networking and bilateral discussions, or simply, for slowing down and enjoying the peace and quiet of the medieval walls and the pristine nature surrounding it.

Whilst Covid-19 was the decisive factor for having a 100% virtual conference in 2021, this year’s conference is, first and foremost, an in-person conference. Covid is still around, and we are seeing different government regulations and trends in European countries. In Austria our regulations are still rather strict compared to other countries in Europe. As hosts of EAPTC 2022 we will continue to monitor the situation and will follow local and federal health and safety guidelines to make this year’s event as safe as possible. We hope to see many of you face to face at the Castle. However, to allow those of you who cannot make it this year to join in as well, we are planning to livestream several sessions including opening and closing events. We will share more information about the hybrid format closer to the conference dates.

The Conference will feature a range of exciting topics including environmental peacebuilding, technology for peace (PeaceTech) and knowledge management. We will also be looking at lessons from Afghanistan, particularly in view of the Comprehensive Approach and the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus.

The horrific course of events in Ukraine in the past four weeks has also prompted us to include discussions around Ukraine, particularly as they relate to the consequences for mission preparation and training. In our fireside chat we will also provide space for broader reflection on the implications of the Russian war in Ukraine.

In most cases we will run concurrent sessions dedicated to the mentioned topics. We will provide more details on the daily schedule including specific session titles, facilitators and speakers in due course and will then also request you register for specific sessions you are interested in to allow ASPR to prepare accordingly.

Finally, the programme on the second day also provides an opportunity for you to showcase your latest training initiatives, projects and concepts you are working on to the EAPTC community during the Market Place of Ideas (Ideas Bazaar).
