Abstract:
This policy brief provides an overview of the current state of the debate on the links between the planetary crisis, security and peace from the perspective of Austrian stakeholders. Climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution are increasingly recognised as key drivers and amplifiers of conflict, while armed conflicts and militarisation, conversely, cause considerable ecological damage and additional emissions. Against this backdrop, the paper presents the approach of environmental peacebuilding as a conceptual framework that integrates ecological sustainability, peace promotion and security. Based on the results of an expert workshop with representatives from politics, administration, science, business and civil society,
- delays in the climate/peace discourse,
- international conflicts with environmental dimensions,
- threats to security from the consequences of climate change
- and security risks from fossil fuel dependencies
as key challenges. Finally, recommendations are outlined on how Austrian actors can address the climate, environment and peace nexus more coherently and effectively.
